Details: Amazon.de For the 10th anniversary of these great and undisputed pioneers of German-language hip hop, an album that sets new standards. To take it up a notch, to redefine the "fantastic" in the name once again—that was the goal. Or at least, the task set for themselves and by their fans. The leap over the high bar was successful, even if not magna cum laude. There's only one reason for that: It's simply not possible to go any higher, faster, or further than where you've already been. Clearly, on this CD, Smudo and his co. show all the rappers born in their wake—and there are quite a few of them—what a hip-hop rake is all about. 4:99 consists of 17 tracks that thematically reflect their own biography and musically follow what is considered today's production standard. US standard, mind you. What's pleasingly noticeable is that Smudo, Hausmarke, Thomas D., and And.Y don't attempt to replicate the "Sie ist weg" hit formula on any of their songs. They experiment, as in the super-funky "Le Smou" with a soul-stirring gospel choir, but never go so far that the radio might say "no." Every track is a hit because it has Fanta Vier written on it. The four band members know this. And they enjoy this role: "The world is at our feet and we're standing on it," says the first single, "Mfg." The lyrics are clever, never wisecracking, and always with the necessary dose of irony, like the horror scenario of life as a fallen pop star presented by Hausmarke ("Michi Beck in Hell") or the opening track, "Und täglich grüßen Fanta 4/Romantic Fighters." It states: "Breaking new ground and networking ideas"—actually the best phrase to describe Fanta Vier's previous CDs, including this one. A must for fans, a good idea for those interested. --Richard Goerlich Product descriptions 4:99 Description review The (almost) anticipated comeback of these hip-hop Swabians, who have now apparently been reformed nationwide, was ushered in with a bang: after quite successful solo projects, they returned to the studio together to rock every MTVIVA rotation in the country. And, as we all know, the LP actually went from zero to one in its first week. While the level of the thematically ingenious "MfG" track, which follows the motto "before we fall, we'd rather stand out," isn't maintained, the album nevertheless contains further samples of upper Fanta4 quality with songs like Hausmarke's "Michi Beck In Hell" or the cut "Die Stadt Die Es Nicht Gibt" (The City That Doesn't Exist), which revolves around a Hildegard Knef voice sample. Overall, everything has stayed the same. Michi Beck delivers a storytelling style, Smudo raps cleverly as always, and the man in the background, And. Y, puts together arguably the best Fanta beats of the decade—although they can quickly sound overproduced. Nevertheless: Heads up to Benztown!
