Details: Movieman.de German science fiction is relatively rare, but in 1989, Peter Fleischmann set out to rectify this situation. He and several colleagues wrote a screenplay based on the novel by the Strugatzky brothers and created a film in a German-Russian-French co-production that is exceptionally philosophical and poses questions that have no easy answers. The film is indebted to European cinema and is incomparable to any Hollywood product. Instead, it is a cerebral film, true science fiction, consisting not of laser beams and space battles, but of ideas and thoughts. Fleischmann cast Edward Zentara, a very popular actor in Poland, in the lead role. Conclusion: Outstanding SF from Europe Movieman's commentary on the DVD: Technically fine considering its age. Only the contrast could have been a bit better. The bonus material is simply beautiful. Image: The time period for this film wasn't particularly good, but that perhaps contributes to the work's impact. The colors are quite good, with tones more commonly found in deserts. There is some noise, but it's not particularly distracting. The compression is sometimes noticeable as block noise (00:46:11). The image is somewhat blurry and at best reaches a pleasant level here (01:40:18). The contrast is disappointing in dark scenes, as it's often difficult to make out anything. At 00:36:12, for example, you wonder what's going on, as the blackness swallows up all the details. Occasionally, you notice flickering in the image, but only rarely. As already mentioned, the original is no longer the best. There are scratches of varying severity in the material almost throughout (e.g. 00:30:48 or 00:07:30). Sound: The stereo sound is significantly better than the picture. It certainly doesn't work miracles, but it's pleasing and creates a pleasant spatiality, including well-placed effects, such as the typical helicopter noise that can be heard frequently. The dialogue is clean and clear. Extras: In addition to the trailer in a short and a longer version—the latter runs over five minutes—there are a photo gallery and storyboards. The highlight of the bonus material, however, is the almost hour-long making-of, which delves into many aspects of the production. Lead actor Zentara also gets to speak and demonstrates that his German isn't that bad after all. This documentary doesn't look quite as fresh as it looks. The colors are faded, the sound is poor in places, and the noise level is high. But all of that can and should be overlooked, as this extra is relatively rare and has a lot to offer for those interested. --movieman.de Product description The research team in the spaceship above the alien planet stares in bewilderment at the images being transmitted directly to the giant screen via the photocells in the eyes of their scout, Rumata. Rumata is violating the most important commandment of his secret mission. He must not interfere in the course of history. Under no circumstances may he kill. In view of the murders and tortures perpetrated by the cruel rulers of this medieval planet, it is becoming increasingly difficult for Rumata to applaud impassively when another person is quartered for begging him for help. Rumata discovers emotions like love and hate, tenderness and aggression, which have long since become alien to Earth's people. He takes up his sword and laser weapon. Now, on top of everything, his employers are against him. Bonus material: Making Of; photo gallery; storyboards; Trailers;
