Details: Review Following the American "Mosaic" release "The Holman and Russo Charts" and the Japanese 5-CD box set "The Creative World of Stan Kenton" (see stereoplay 5/92), Capitol's "Retrospective" is the most comprehensive Kenton reissue currently available on the CD market. Four CDs contain the most important Kenton recordings from 1943 to 1961. Disc 1 (67:03) features highlights from the albums "Artistry In Rhythm" (1943), "The June Christy Years" (1947/48), "Milestones," "Greatest Hits," and "Kenton In Hi-Fi." Disc 2 (67:23) features two to three tracks each from "Stan Kenton Presents," "City Of Glass" (1951), "Kenton Showcase," and "New Concepts Of Artistry In Rhythm." Disc 3 (65:58) features excerpts from Kenton's "Contemporary Concepts," Johnny Richards' "Cuban Fire" (1956), and "Kentons In Stereo." Disc 4 (63:01) contains the most representative examples from Kenton's Grammy-winning albums "Adventures In Jazz" and "West Side Story" (both 1961), "Adventures In Blues," "Adventures In Time," and "Kenton/Wagner." Insiders know that this collection contains the finest examples of modern jazz's most famous big band. Stan's prominent vocalists June Christy and Chris Connors participate, as do his key arrangers Ray Wetzel, Pete Rugolo, and Bill Holman, as well as star soloists Art Pepper, Lee Konitz, Bill Perkins, Maynard Ferguson, Charlie Mariano, and many others. A superb booklet with historical and discographic information completes the box set. "Reflections" deserves the first post-Olympic gold medal. ** Artist: 08-10 ** Sound: 05-08 © Stereoplay -- Stereoplay Product descriptions Retrospective Description
