Details: Amazon.de The outstanding soundtrack to an excellent film about the 1970s exquisitely conveys the spirit of an era in that turbulent decade, when the musicians' makeup, hairstyle, and clothing often seemed more important than their artistic performance. This document of this excessively crazy and absurd era, staged as a blend of musical, thriller, love story, performance, and A Clockwork Orange, was produced by Michael Stipe. The REM singer (hits: "It's The End Of The World As We Know It," "Losing My Religion," "Everybody Hurts") is also responsible for compiling the film's soundtrack, indulging his enthusiasm for the short but wild days of glam rock. There are 19 songs in total. Placebo faithfully interprets the T. Rex hit "20th Century Boy," while Teenage Fanclub & Donna Matthews take on "Personal Crisis" (originally by the New York Dolls). Venus In Furs, consisting of Bernard Butler (ex-Suede), Jon Greenwood, and Thom Yorke (Radiohead), saxophonist Andy Mackay (ex-Roxy Music), and Paul Kimble (ex-Grant Lee Buffalo), prove with an extremely authentic version of Roxy Music's "Ladytron" and "2 HB" (1972) that their seminal vocalist Bryan Ferry can certainly be replaced. The all-star band, which also appears in the film, can be heard five times on the soundtrack, including a fantastic version of Brian Eno's "Baby's On Fire." It's only logical that Roxy Music's former bird of paradise couldn't be left out of this colorful lineup, with its own oldie ("Needle In The Camel's Eye"). Equally essential: some unsurpassable classics by T. Rex ("Diamond Meadows"), Lou Reed ("Satellite Love"), Steve Harley ("Make Me Smile"), and once again Roxy Music ("Virginia Plain"), whose concoction of rock 'n' roll monotony, jazz and classical music forms, exotic dance rhythms, and canzone schmaltz undoubtedly ranks among the best of the Seventies sound. The undisputed highlights of the film's soundtrack, however, are the following two new compositions: "Hot One" by Shudder To Think—a melancholic ballad that pays homage to their idol David Bowie. And Grant Lee Buffalo's "The Whole Shebang," which oscillates between "Rocky Horror Picture Show"-esque sensuality, cheerful honky-tonk piano, and swing. All in all, the Velvet Goldmine CD offers entertaining music that perfectly reflects the 70s' predominant musical mix of charm, decadence, and frivolity, and underscores that this was by no means just a passing fad. --Thomas Hammerl Product descriptions Media Condition: Mint (M) | Sleeve Condition: Mint (M) | Country: UK | Released: 1998 | Artist: Various | Format: CD, Compilation, Promo | Release ID: 5181859
