Details: Winner of the 2008 "Midem" Award for Best Historical Photography. The majority of Robert Schumann's later works, some of which were written for soloists, chorus, and orchestra, have been greatly neglected over the years and rarely performed. The secular oratorio "Paradise and the Peri," Opus 50, fits this category, despite being a resounding success in its day. This can be attributed, to some extent, to the heavy pathos in the plot and libretto, which has made it unpopular with more discerning audiences of newer generations. The story of the fallen angel "Peri" comes from Persian mythology, which was a particular fascination with people at the time. It tells of the angel's attempts to complete three different tasks in order to achieve salvation and return to heaven. Carlo Maria Giulini, who died in 2005, is considered one of the great maestros of the 20th century. He made his name as the first chief conductor of the Milan Radio Orchestra, which he co-founded in 1950, and through the performance of obscure operas by Scarlatti, Malipiero, and Handel. As chief conductor of La Scala, he became famous from 1953 onwards with the great Italian operatic repertoire, but in the late 1960s he devoted himself to the concert repertoire, particularly the Romantic symphonies of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, and Bruckner. He was also famous for his performances and recordings of the sacred music of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Verdi, and Faure. This extremely important "archive" release of a stunning 1974 performance of this rare Schumann masterpiece also features one of the leading sopranos of the era, Margaret Price.
