Details: AN ANCIENT OBSERVER is the follow-up to Hamasyan's label debut, MOCKROOT, about which the Guardian wrote: "A phenomenal pianist, an irrepressible entertainer, a promising experimenter with hi-tech tricks, and a creative world music composer." Regarding his latest solo recording, which features ten new compositions, the artist himself says: "These pieces are musical observations of the world we live in today and the burden of history we carry with us." The pieces on AN ANCIENT OBSERVER—two based on Armenian melodies—were composed over the past four years. Some are through-composed, meaning they're fully written out, while others leave plenty of room for improvisation. Vocal layers were added to the mix on several occasions. As with most of Hamasyan's compositions, he draws on a wide range of influences, from baroque dance to hip hop; for some tracks, pedals were combined with a synthesizer. And of course, as always with Hamasyan, the sounds of his native Armenia are also present. ECHO Jazz Award winner Tigran Hamasyan was born in Armenia in 1987. He and his family moved to Los Angeles in 2003. He currently lives in Armenia's capital, Yerevan. He has been playing the piano since the age of three and began performing at festivals at the age of eleven. In 2003, he won the piano competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival. In addition to numerous awards and unanimous critical acclaim, the Armenian has built a loyal following among listeners worldwide. Famous colleagues such as Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Brad Mehldau are full of praise.
