A true story: There will be a lot of wind surrounding Julia Roberts' wardrobe in Erin Brockovich, a bold fashion show of the most daring hemlines and confidence thanks to Wonderbra. Roberts is outrageously sexy in the title role of this fact-based comedy-drama, but she and director Steven Soderbergh are far too intelligent to rely solely on high heels and cleavage. Susannah Grant's sassy script propels this winning team of star, director, and material, pulling out all the stops. Together with Ed Lachman, his outstanding cinematographer from The Limey, Soderbergh masters this top-class project with the passion of an independent, combining the simple appearance with dynamic verve and the same swift editing technique that he also used in his rightly acclaimed film Out of Sight had already used. Broke and desperate, twice-divorced and single mother Erin swindles into a job as an office clerk for attorney Ed Masry (Albert Finney), who feels indebted to her after losing her car accident case. Erin soon discovers suspicious connections between a powerful electric company's mishandling of toxic chromium and the poisoned water supply in Hinkley, California, whose residents are suffering from this legacy of death and disease. By combining the dramatic strengths of Norma Rae and Silkwood, Erin Brockovich presents cold facts through a warm and human perspective, particularly in Erin's interactions with dying victims and her relationship with George, her Harley-riding neighbor (superbly played by Aaron Eckhart), a devoted human being unlike any Erin has ever met. True, some of these details have been embellished a bit for dramatic effect, but the true essence of Erin Brockovich reinforces the satisfaction that greed, negligence, and economic arrogance stand no chance against the passionate campaigner. (The real Erin Brockovich, incidentally, appears briefly in the role of a café waitress.) --Jeff Shannon My Best Friend's Wedding: One of the best romantic comedies of the 90s, My Best Friend's Wedding not only gave Julia Roberts a wonderful platform for a truly successful comeback, it also stands out by completely eschewing the conventional plot elements of the genre. Julia plays a famous New York restaurant critic who made a binding pact with her best friend (Dermot Mulroney), a brief lover during their college days: If neither of them is married by the time they turn 28, they will get married together. Just as the deadline is fast approaching, Mulroney calls from Chicago and asks Roberts to come. He wants to introduce her to his seemingly perfect fiancée (Cameron Diaz) and announces that he is getting married in three days. This leaves a shocked Julia very little time to sabotage the wedding and marry the man she now realizes she has always loved. Whether she gets what she wants or pays the price for her selfish behavior, heartbreak is almost inevitable. What happens next is left to us in complete uncertainty by Ronald Bass's cleverly constructed screenplay until the very end. Rupert Everett has rightly received rave reviews for his outshining performances as Julia’s gay friend, who supports her in her schemes (although only until
