Details: Movieman.de Sean Penn's direction isn't always brilliant. The editing juxtaposition of strip club and tales of grief—quite obvious symbolism for the decline of morals—is a bit over the top, but the film always comes close to brilliance when Jack Nicholson and David Morse appear. Both deliver incredibly intense performances, so captivating that you wish a happy ending for one, and for the other. And yet you know there can be no happy ending for either. The finale is magnificent, as John Booth gives his pursuer Freddy perhaps the greatest gift he could offer him: He leads him to a place where he can finally grieve. The bottom line: An intense, emotionally gripping drama. But not the action thriller the film is marketed as on the back cover... Movieman's DVD commentary: An average DVD with acceptable picture and sound. The audio commentary is the only extra, but it's very good! Image: The image is average at best. The colors aren't particularly pronounced. Noise is noticeable (00:41:40) and at times distracting. The compression causes blockiness and artifacts (00:15:29). Sharpness is only average. Even in close-ups, the hair on the head and face appears more like mass than detail (00:42:04). While the contrast is good at the very dark finale, it's noticeable from time to time that the contours are sloppy (black jacket against a black background; 00:57:21). Sound: The German version is only stereo, but it doesn't differ much from the English DD 5.1. This is also and primarily due to the fact that Sean Penn's film thrives on its dialogue. It's delivered seamlessly and comes across powerfully in both language versions. Extras: The only extra is an audio commentary, in which the participants don't speak together. Rather, the commentary alternates between the speakers. You can hear Sean Penn, David Morse, Angelica Huston, Vilmos Zigmond, and David Rabe. Penn narrates a lot, including how the film's title song came about.
