In Katharina Thalbach's production, this afterlife clearly takes its place in the realm of shadows. Like the title characters in the prologue, a rather confused Grimm fairytale world also appears in the Witch's Ride, the orchestral prelude to the second scene. After the children's victory over the gingerbread witch, who, between siren-like coquettishness and abysmal ugliness, teaches them to fear their own desires and fears, the sophisticated circular structure of Thalbach's interpretation becomes apparent. Instead of joining in the raucous joy of their jubilant parents' reunion, Hansel and Gretel sneak back into the liberated paradise of the fairytale world of shadows, so that together with the strange figures of their and our children's sound world, they can continually jeopardize the reality of their own lives, thoughts and dreams with the means of their imagination.
